Lifelong learning and cultural fluency needed to thrive in connected ASEAN: Elim Chew
Changemaker rallies PSB Academy's diploma graduands to embrace lifelong learning and cultural fluency to be meaningful "Future Makers" in a more connected ASEAN community

SINGAPORE, Jan 20, 2018 - (Media OutReach) - Over 1,000 students from PSB Academy's (PSB) schools of business and management, engineering and technology, life and physical sciences completed their diploma programmes today. Joining the graduation ceremony this morning at the Academy's S$15 million City Campus was changemaker and homegrown entrepreneur Elim Chew.

Elim rallied graduands to embrace continuous learning and sensitivity to different cultures in Southeast Asia in order to succeed and contribute to an increasingly connected ASEAN: "It is an exciting time for this generation of young people, and while they equip themselves with a solid foundation in education, they need to appreciate the benefits of lifelong learning as they gather experience in the real world, so they can always be on the cutting-edge of technological breakthroughs that come in a fast-changing ASEAN today."

"Besides having a sense of creativity and innovation, they should consider their sensitivity quotient -- a quality of leaders that allows them to see what needs to be changed, so they can rise above issues to create solutions, to build global brands and provide for their community," said Elim Chew, who was founder of street-style brand 77th Street.

Designed to help students benefit from academic rigor, real-world practicality and accelerated learning, PSB's diploma programmes offer students the option of enrolling into some of the leading universities from the United Kingdom and Australia, enabling them to complete their undergraduate degrees in two years*.

Top student from PSB's Diploma in Business Administration (Accounting and Finance) Wong Ya Xing, 26, hopes to be able to pursue a career as an accountant after she successfully enrolled at UK's top 12th university, Coventry University. She is currently pursuing Coventry's Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Finance and Accounting in Singapore at PSB. "Studying at PSB has helped me cultivate soft skills such as critical thinking and the ability to interact with a diversity of cultures, which I believe are important in easing me into my career in future."

"Everything I've learned in the classroom has helped me get one step further towards achieving my goal. This is aligned with my belief that education is beyond just an academic pursuit - it should also shape other facets of my character," says Ya Xing, who also plans to pursue an Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification and a Master of Business Administration upon graduating from Coventry.

Dr Sam Choon-Yin, Dean of PSB Academy extolled graduands to go beyond good grades and excellent employment outcomes and give back to the community from whence they came: "With over 50 nationalities furthering their studies at PSB, our vibrant and cosmopolitan campuses serve as hotbeds for the cultivation of cultural fluency, a unique experience that students gain from our Future Academy model. We are on a mission of equipping graduates to be "Future Makers", to not just thrive in the New Economy, but also contribute toward making their communities better."

PSB's graduation ceremony was held in conjunction with the Academy's first Open House of the year at Marina Square.
