Panasonic to Build ALIVH Multi-Layer Resin Board Production Plant in Vietnam
The company's third overseas ALIVH production facility, besides two in Taiwan, will produce PCBs for smartphones and other high-functionality mobile terminals

Osaka, Japan, Sep 08, 2011 - (ACN Newswire) - Panasonic Electronic Devices Co., Ltd. today announced that the company and Panasonic Vietnam Co., Ltd. will jointly build a new plant in Vietnam for producing ALIVH multi-layer resin boards for use in smartphones and other high-functionality mobile terminals. The new production facility will be located on the premises of Panasonic Electronic Devices Vietnam Co., Ltd.

The world mobile phone market is undergoing a rapid shift from standard phones to smartphones, which are expected to continue growing further. To provide high functionality, smartphones contain a great number of components which are mounted on printed circuit boards. As those phones become more compact with increased functions, ever thinner and denser circuit boards are required. Panasonic's unique ALIVH multi-layer resin boards have earned a high reputation for their ability to meet such market needs.

Overseas, Panasonic is currently manufacturing ALIVH boards in Taiwan at the facilities of Panasonic Taiwan Co., Ltd., whose output capacity will be increased to 6 million units per month in terms of smartphones by the end of 2011, quadruple the figure achieved in the last fiscal year ended March 2011. In Vietnam, production at the new plant is expected to reach 3.5 million per month by August 2012, bringing Panasonic's total overseas production capacity to 9.5 million units per month, almost six times the level of the last fiscal year.

Panasonic positions the ALIVH business as one of its key businesses, as the ALIVH technology is indispensable in the evolution of smartphones and other high-functionality mobile terminals. Panasonic continues to strengthen the ALIVH business to meet the needs of smartphone and mobile terminal manufacturers worldwide.

ALIVH: Any Layer Interstitial Via Hole

ALIVH is a multi-layer resin board developed and commercialized by Panasonic as the world's first full-layer Interstitial Via Hole (IVH). In October 1996, using ALIVH boards, Panasonic (then known as Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.) developed a mobile phone that was the lightest and smallest in the industry at that time with less than 100 g in weight and less than 100 cc in volume. Since then, ALIVH boards have been widely used in Japan and overseas. As of March 2011, global shipments of ALIVH boards exceeded 400 million units in terms of mobile phones.
