Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2013 Reflects the Competence of Indonesian Automotive Industry

JAKARTA, INDONESIA, Sep 19, 2013 - (ACN Newswire) - The largest automotive exhibition in Indonesia, Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS), is officially opened today. As a must-attend automotive event, the exhibition is an agenda for automotive players, analysts, consumers and aficionados. This year's IIMS was officially opened by Vice President of Republic of Indonesia, Boediono. He was accompanied by the Minister of Industry of Republic of Indonesia, Mohammad S. Hidayat, The Minister of Transportation, E.E. Mangindaan, The Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs, Roy Suryo, DKI Jakarta Deputy Governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Chairman of The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industry (Gaikindo), Sudirman MR, Chairman of IIMS 2013 Committee, Johnny Darmawan, and other officials. The official opening ceremony was also attended by representatives of sole agents (APM), the ambassadors of neighboring countries, and other distinguished guests.

In his remarks, Vice President Boediono stated his confidence that the automotive industry will be the backbone of Indonesian industry and industrialization. He said IIMS is the right momentum to support the growth of national economy, particularly through the industrialization efforts. "Automotive is a strategic industry that is able to support the three pillars of national industrialization policy. The government hopes that, through of IIMS 2013, industry players will put more focus on strengthening industrialization structure," said Boediono.

He then explained further about the three pillars. The first pillar is the process of increasing the added value of Indonesian natural resources; from raw materials into finished or semi-finished materials. The second pillar is maximizing the industrial impact in the domestic market or the multiplier effect of the industry such as the increasing absorption of work force and more industrial supporting networks. The last pillar is to become part of the global supply chain process, where the industry is not only focus on domestic market but also targets international market.

Government's Commitment to Overcome Transportation Problem in the Country's Capital

During the Official Opening Ceremony, Vice President Boediono also emphasized government's commitment and support to seek the solution to transportation problems in the country's major cities, particularly the capital city of DKI Jakarta, including the traffic issue as Jakarta is both the capital and the mirror of the country.

To support the industrialization process, especially with the increasing support for the low cost green car (LCGC) program, Boediono said there is no need to disallow the public from purchasing new vehicles. He said the increasing economy, due to the transactions, also contributes to drive the growth of public purchasing power.

"I believe we can find another solution to overcome the traffic issue in Jakarta through other means such as increasing the quality and quantity of public transportation and implementing more stringent regulations such as electronic road pricing (ERP). Another important issue to focus on is to provide equal distribution of vehicles in other major cities in Indonesia as the need for mobility is still potential to be further developed. Certainly all these alternatives should be further assessed in order to produce the best result," said Boediono.

Targeting to Become the Biggest Automotive Market in SEA

In line with government's target and expectation, automotive players welcome the optimism expressed through automotive industrialization. This is in accordance with the country's target to become the biggest automotive market in South East Asia.

Chairman of IIMS 2013, Johnny Darmawan, said that with the economic downturn experienced in the second semester of 2013, the country's automotive industry can be considered to be in a stable condition. Numerous positive achievements were recorded by the industry in 2012. The production of four-wheel vehicle in 2012 was 1,065,557 units of up by 27.1% compared to the previous year. From January-July 2013, the production has reached 692,666 units.

In addition, the demand for vehicles keeps on rising as a result of increasing public purchasing power. Last year, four-wheel market in Indonesia reached 1,116,230 units or 32.3% of the total ASEAN market that totaled 3,454,672 units. From January-July 2013, sales of vehicles reached 714,400 units.

However, Johnny Darmawan again emphasized that IIMS is not merely an automotive exhibition as it also acts as a promotional tool to further introduce and demonstrate to a global audience, the huge potential of the country's automotive industry in order to realize the target to become the biggest automotive market in South East Asia. "We hope that Indonesia International Motor Show 2013 can capture the progress of Indonesian automotive industry as well as the economic growth of Indonesian economy in general, thus, drawing foreign investors to invest in local automotive industry."

This year's exhibition area reaches 75,101 square meters to accommodate the participants. This year's participants are 36 brands that consist of 27 passenger car brands and 9 commercial vehicle brands and 276 companies of automotive supporting industries.
