Indonesian Youth must be Prepared to Face AEC

JAKARTA, Dec 31, 2015 - (ACN Newswire) - Indonesia's younger generation must be prepared to face the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which will come into effect starting next month, People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid stated.

"I do not see the government's seriousness to prepare Indonesia's youth to face the AEC. This matter is very important," he stated at his office on Monday. He made the statement while receiving the executives of the Indonesian Muslim Students Action Union (KAMMI) at his office.

Wahid emphasized the need to take serious steps to prepare the youth in the face of the AEC as the role of the younger generation will decide its positive or negative impacts.

He remarked that unless adequate preparations were made, Indonesia would only serve as a market for Southeast Asian countries. Thus, the readiness of the youth to face the MEA is paramount.

"Later, the Indonesian youth will compete in the AEC, and this requires the government's seriousness in preparing them," he affirmed. Hidayat said he had visited Thailand and found that several youth in the country were learning the Indonesian language.

He believes that the Thai youth have understood the fact that Indonesia is a large market for trade in the ASEAN. "They are aware that Indonesia is a huge market, so they are learning Indonesian," he affirmed.

He questioned the readiness of the Indonesian community in the face of the AEC, for instance, its mastery of foreign languages, so that it would not be left behind in the era of free trade. --Antara.
